Phase Transitions and Fluctuations in Mesoscopic Systems

چکیده
In this talk some interesting and up-to-date problems will be mentioned, which are opened recently to more extended and detailed fundamental studies. These are static and dynamical problems of meso-scale physics, and other fields like neural networks or financial markets, where dynamic, nonlinear fluctuations are dominant, new phenomena like stochastic resonances or phase synchronization occur. It is not excluded that these activities will lead to qualitative progress in the field of diagnostics, energetics and laws of signal and noise in fluctuating mesoscopic systems.

Quantum phases and fluctuations in correlated electron systems with frustration and competing interactions are reviewed. In the localized moment case the S=1/2 J1 - J2 - model on a square lattice exhibits a rich phase diagram with magnetic as well as exotic hidden order phases due to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. Their signature in magnetocaloric quantities and the hig...
متن کاملStabilizing Role of Mesoscopic Fluctuations in Spin Systems
The occurrence of mesoscopic fluctuations in statistical systems implies, from the point of view of dynamical theory, the existence of local instabilities. However, the presence of such fluctuations can make a system, as a whole, more stable from the thermodynamic point of view. Thus, in many cases, a local dynamic instability is a requisite for the global thermodynamic stability. This idea is ...
متن کاملAmphiphiles at Interfaces: Simulation of Structure and Phase Behavior
Here we focus on model systems for amphiphilic membranes. After a brief general introduction, we present selected simulation results on monolayers, bilayers, and bilayer stacks. First, we discuss internal phase transitions in membranes and show that idealized models reproduce the generic phase behavior. Then we consider membrane fluctuations and membrane defects. The simulation data is compared...

The cuprates seem to exhibit statistics, dimensionality and phase transitions in novel ways. The nature of excitations [i.e. quasiparticle or collective], spincharge separation, stripes [static and dynamics], inhomogeneities, psuedogap, effect of impurity dopings [e.g. Zn, Ni] and any other phenomenon in these materials must be consistently understood. In this note we suggest Single Electron Tu...
متن کاملMesoscopic Properties of Molecular Folding and Aggregation Processes
Protein folding, peptide aggregation and crystallization, as well as adsorption of molecules on soft or solid substrates have an essential feature in common: In all these processes, structure formation is guided by a collective, cooperative behavior of the molecular subunits lining up to build chainlike macromolecules. Proteins experience conformational transitions related to thermodynamic phas...
